Metal Shutter Houses

Size: 33,000 SF
Collaborator: Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz

We served as the architect of record for these eight high-design duplex units commissioned by HEEA Development LLC.  Project leader Richard DeMarco worked closely with design firm Shigeru Ban Architects and with Dean Maltz Architects on the 11-story, 33,000-square-foot mixed-use project, which includes an art gallery on the first floor.

The building has nine floors of metal shutters, which create a uniform street façade.  When the shutters are retracted, enormous 20-foot-high by 15-foot-wide bi-fold windows are revealed.  They can be opened to create a continuous floor plan between interior spaces and outdoor decks.

Born into a construction family, Steven has nurtured a lifelong passion for design. This interest led him to study architecture in Italy at the American University of Rome and subsequently earn his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He then co-founded an architectural and design firm with his longtime friend, Richard J. DeMarco, RA, AIA. Over the past 40 years, Steven has honed his expertise in the corporate interiors sector, focusing specifically on hospitality, restaurants, food service, amenity and outdoor spaces, fragrance and laboratories, and retail showrooms.  Steven deeply respects all things creative, actively fostering this within his firm by sharing his appreciation for music, art, and architecture, and by encouraging a spirit of curiosity that pushes the boundaries of creative thought.
