Metal Shutter Houses

Size: 33,000 SF
Collaborator: Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz

We served as the architect of record for these eight high-design duplex units commissioned by HEEA Development LLC.  Project leader Richard DeMarco worked closely with design firm Shigeru Ban Architects and with Dean Maltz Architects on the 11-story, 33,000-square-foot mixed-use project, which includes an art gallery on the first floor.

The building has nine floors of metal shutters, which create a uniform street façade.  When the shutters are retracted, enormous 20-foot-high by 15-foot-wide bi-fold windows are revealed.  They can be opened to create a continuous floor plan between interior spaces and outdoor decks.

Mateusz Slapinski

Project Manager

Mateusz has had a deep appreciation for the outdoors since his childhood in Poland.  Inspired by nature's beauty, he developed an early passion for art and design.  During his studies at the Bialystok University of Technology, he gained hands-on experience in architecture and construction, which provided him with a comprehensive understanding of design and building processes.  An ardent hiker, traveler, and scuba diver, Mateusz is always seeking his next adventure.  His commitment to continuous learning and his ability to tackle complex challenges are evident in all his work.  As a Project Manager, his sharp eye for detail, strong problem-solving skills, and holistic approach to design makes him a key asset to the MADGI team.
