Metal Shutter Houses

We served as the architect of record for these eight high-design duplex units commissioned by HEEA Development LLC.  Project leader Richard DeMarco worked closely with design firm Shigeru Ban Architects and with Dean Maltz Architects on the 11-story, 33,000-square-foot mixed-use project, which includes an art gallery on the first floor.

The building has nine floors of metal shutters, which create a uniform street façade.  When the shutters are retracted, enormous 20-foot-high by 15-foot-wide bi-fold windows are revealed.  They can be opened to create a continuous floor plan between interior spaces and outdoor decks.

Adithi’s architectural journey began at Manipal University in India, followed by graduate studies in the Middle East and the United States, where she earned a Master of Architecture from Michigan State University.  Her extensive global travels spanning Doha, Dubai, and Bangalore have profoundly shaped her design perspective, fostering a deep appreciation for the intersection of diverse cultures, landscapes, and built environments.  Since joining MADGI Design in 2019, Adithi has leveraged this international experience to navigate complex projects across multiple scales.  An enthusiastic explorer, she is always planning her next trip to experience a new culture, embarking on a long hike, or preparing a spicy meal.
